There are many different causes of damp patches in the house depending on the situation and where it is located. Damp in a bathroom for example may just be a case of lack of ventilation where a shower is generating steam. However, in a bedroom where damp is seen at the top of the wall where it meets the ceiling could be a result of a roof problem.
If there is a slipped tile or cracked tile on the roof it can be an entry point for water to get in. If this is left unrepaired it can lead to water damage inside and damp patches. If you do discover some damp the first thing to check is the roof. This can be done simply by inspecting the tiles from the ground level. If the tiles look like they may be damaged, it is best to hire a professional to inspect the roof and find out the extent of the damage. They will also be able to best advise you on the course of action to minimise any further damage and get the repair fixed.
The image below shows damp in my house that was caused by a flat roof in need of repair. The roof was sagging and water was collecting on top of it. In my case it was more economical to replace the whole roof, because the damage was already extensive and the roof was 30 years old. The Derby Roofer that inspected and replaced my roof did an excellent job and really minimised any disruptions while the work was being carried out.
It is always better to keep a roof well maintained and catch any problems before they escalate into leaks and damp. It is easier to inspect a slopped tile roof from the ground for any visual problems, like broken tiles, than it is to climb up to see a flat roof. It may be possible to see it by looking from a further distance. However, to check for rips and sagging it most likely will be necessary to climb up to get a better look.
There will be times when it is unavoidable but to leave your dog at home all by himself while you are out for most of the day. It is far from an ideal situation, but sometimes it is necessary. There are even times when all family members may be out all day at work and the dog has to entertain himself for a large portion of the day. There are a number of ways to keep your canine mentally stimulated and avoid any naughty behaviours or destruction while you are out.
There is a great range of really tough dog toys that will last through some serious chewing. Have a look at the Planet Dog Toys UK range of balls and rubber bones. The balls are the strongest of all the toys and most of them have been rated 5 out of 5 on the chomper scale, meaning they are the most suitable for the strongest of chewers. These dog balls do commend a higher price than your average ball from the corner pet shop, but the quality far outweighs the additional cost outlay, giving you a great value for money.
There is another brand of tough dog toy that will almost stand up to the strengths of the Planet dog flexible rubber toys. You can get a few Chuckit toys and leave these with your dog. Again the balls will be the strongest and can still provide your dog with hours of entertainment. Alternatively they make really great fetch toys, just perfect for tiring out your pet after a long day at the office.
If you are really worried about what your dog gets up to when your back is turned, then the Motorola Scout 1 camera comes highly recommended. It allows you to keep tabs on your pouch and even pan and zoom around the room. Record the footage and watch it back later, you will soon see who does all the destructive damage, if you have more than one pet and often come home to mayhem.
It doesn’t need to be a hassle or a problem to leave your dog home alone. Just be sure to prepare and leave your dog with something interesting to play with, so he can keep himself occupied and out of trouble.
